Maine's Outdoor Learning Center, Maine Guide School, Registered Maine Guide
John and Tami,
I just wanted to send you this picture from one of Maine's newest guides. Thank you very much for helping me achieve a lifelong dream!
While I'm sure it's possible to study for and pass the exam without taking your course, there's no doubt that it made me more prepared, made the experience much more enjoyable and helped me avoid stumbling along the way. Being able to support a Maine-based business like yours is simply a bonus.
I will recommend your school to any other potential guides I meet along the way. I have no doubt that their experience will be as enjoyable and rewarding as mine has been.
Thank you both for all of your help. Best of luck as you expand your business and course offerings going forward.
Dear John and Tami,
I have been meaning to write this thank you for awhile. Jay and I took the Maine Guides course in April and we just wanted to say thank you for all your help. Passing the test was just the icing on the cake. We both came out of that course better and more knowledgeable outdoorsman/women. The instruction and content was both interesting and useful. The map and compass portion has us feeling so much more confident in the woods. From the minute we signed up for the course until after we took the test we were grateful for your professionalism and enthusiasm. It is quite clear that you are both passionate about your work and helping your students succeed. Our friends Ryan and Joe are taking the course this week, we told them it was a must!!! On a side note, I was grateful to have had the opportunity to meet and talk with your daughter in law Jess, she is quite an inspiration!!
Jay and I are grateful and thankful. We would be interested in other courses you may offer in the future!
Erin S. and Jay M.
Dear Tami and John and Greg,
I just wanted to write and tell you what a great week I had and how much I enjoyed the class. My head is still spinning from all I learned.
I'm sure I was for John not the easiest student. I'm an avid hiker and backpacker, but I was clearly the least knowledgeable in the class. At times I was overwhelmed by how much I didn't know. My father was a serious outdoorsman, a hunter and fisherman, a backwoods camper and a builder of canoes.
Unfortunately, he died before he got the chance to pass those lessons onto me, and I've regretted that for a long time. But ever since I found out I was soon to be a father to a son, I've been on a mission to learn as much as I can. I want to pass onto my son the kinds of things my father would have passed along to me. It's not easy. People who grew up around this stuff have no idea how little others know. That's why I took the course, and, boy, was it a good idea. I learned so much and every day, without knowing it, John and Greg inspired me to learn more. I can't thank you enough. Not only now do I know a whole lot more, I know what I need to learn next. For me the course would have been a bargain at twice the price.
I'd also like to say how much I admire John's teaching. As someone who spends every day teaching adults (college students, anyway; sometimes they're adults),I think he needs a patch on the other arm that says master teacher. If ever the market for Maine Guide's dries up, he could certainly find work teaching teachers. He's "a gentleman and a gentle man" and one of the best leaders in the classroom I've come across.
Thanks again, John S.
Dear Tami and John,
Thanks for the great experience. I truly enjoyed it. John, I think the approach you use is exactly what is warranted. Not a rehash of rules and laws we could all read but a sensible and pragmatic view of not only what it takes to become a Maine guide but what it means to be one.
I also have great appreciation for the professional and detail oriented administration and logistic support. Tami, John gives you all the credit for that. The help you provided me while I was on travel was outstanding. I don't know if the other guys realize the amount of state BS you guys cut through in the scheduling of the testing. That is a testament to the credibilty your courses have and the respect the state holds for those courses.
Thank you again. I will call pass or the other option....
John,on a different note we should champion a new network reality show-we can call it "Monson". My goodness is there any state organization he(Tom A.) hasn't gone toe-to-toe with? He was a riot. Take care. Mike M.
When I first arrived at the school I was a little hesitant, unsure of what to expect… When John stepped up to speak, I thought to myself “Oh No, this guy is serious about this Guide’s stuff!” Not that I was here for play time… I guess I thought I already knew so much about hunting and fishing that becoming a Guide would be a walk in park….. With just a few sentences from John, I knew I didn’t know as much as I thought…. Well I received the most rewarding surprise of my life. It was a learning vacation! We laughed, shared, told stories, gathered around the camp fire, cooked, fished, canoed, all mixed in with what we needed to learn to become a Guide. I’ve met some incredible people this past week that have become friends. Anyway, I could go on and on about the whole week ~ I think my wife and kids have heard it all, maybe even a couple of times over.
I’m so happy I chose your Hands On school for one of the greatest experiences of my life.
John & Tami,
Today I received my grades on the Guide's Test !! I want to thank both of you and John Campbell for assisting me with obtaining my Maine Guide License. This has been a goal of mine for many years and I hope to put it to good use in the future. It would have been very difficult to of passed the oral as well as the written tests without the information that you provided. The "Hands On" Registered Maine Guide School was extremely beneficial. The information I learned from you and the other participants will stay with me for a lifetime.
This has been quite a week. I’ve learned more in this week than I have in all the years of hunting. You are all wonderful people, and I thank you for helping me reach my goals. The “Hands On” is a great way of learning.
This week has been an amazing week in many, many ways. I feel larger somehow (and this is not due to the great food! J ) What a great group! We all made many happy memories together these past six days. Laughter, happiness, heart to heart talks, sharing information and selves, hugs ~ what more could one ask for?
Thanks for everything,
I’ve now passed my oral and written exams and am one of Maine’s newest Registered Maine Guides. I never could have done it without all of you. This hands on experience has been one of the finest weeks of my life. You people are great! Keep doing this course and I promise to keep in touch with you all. You’ve got my #1 Vote!
Thanks a Million,
Wow - what more can a person say about this awesome “Hands On” learning vacation. My eyes and ears have been opened to so many things that take place in woods of Maine. If I had to say one thing about what I liked best during the whole week I’d be speechless. If I had to say many things that I liked the best I’d have to write a novel…. But here it is any way… I loved cooking outdoors - making biscuits was a blast! Learning how to fly fish was something I always wanted to do - that part was super, but….catching a trout was the highlight! The canoe trip was fantastic. By the way John C. my strokes have really improved - you’d be proud. Anyway, I can for see a novel in the beginnings - so Thank you!
I would like to thank you all for the information, time and effort you put into helping me to get through the class and the test. I will always hold a special place in my heart for all of you. Thank you - more than simple words can express.
Jim K., aka “Ted Nugent”
I have had a wonderful week. I’ve met new and interesting people, plus I had fantastic host! I’ve had years of knowledge stuffed into my head in a weeks’ time (more than I would have thought possible). I’ve learned a lot, laughed a lot. And had the best week I’ve had in a very long time.
Thanks to you for all of it!
Thank you for the most memorable experience and the priceless gift of knowledge.
This week far exceeded my expectations. Thanks to all!
John, Tami, and Crew,

May your thoughts be clear and your shots clean.

It was a GREAT week
At Maine’s Guide School…..
I feel like I finally have developed the “awareness” of the Maine woods and waters that for so many years have been missing.
What a great time this week has been. I wished I would have done it sooner. Thank you for sharing of yourselves, your knowledge, and creating this program in the first place.
To all the people who made this week special ~ Thank you!. A week of fun, learning, great food, and great people. John and Tami ~ follow your dream to Belize! Thanks again for everything.
Thank you! Everyone! For a great week of Hands on learning. It was quite an experience. I hope I’ve retained more than I think…. I know now that I know more than what I did when I arrived on Saturday…
